The Livescribe 3 Smartpen adds new functionality by pairing it with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. The Livescribe 3 is still capable of syncing handwriting and audio, but instead of recording the audio from a built in microphone, the recording happens on an iPhone or iPad paired to the pen with Bluetooth. With the pen connected to an iOS device using Bluetooth, features like handwriting recognition and cloud based storage options are handled by the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F06%2Fios-7-accessibility-overview-what-we.html&ei=2rmTUvaAHdLdsATZ-oKYDA&usg=AFQjCNFtKveMynfcNpAngZ-zU9c7GrqJWg&sig2=vVk-bQta4TunkyVrsw2Qew&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">iOS</a> devices. Most of the pens functionality is handled with the free Livescribe+ app that seamlessly manages the Smartpen.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Read on to find out more about the Livescribe 3.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><a name="more"></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Hardware and Requirements</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Livescribe 3 is a sleek and streamlined device that is about the same size as some thicker standard pens. The pen twists open to reveal the ball point tip. No more forgetting to turn on your pen, it turns on automatically when the tip is out. At the bottom is a special camera that allows the pen to track its location on the page. At the top of the pen is a stylist tip. The stylist tip hides a micro-USB charging port. Speaking of charging, Livescribe claims the pen gets 14 hours of battery life. At the top there is also an indicator light that shows the status of the pen. The Livescribe 3 uses advanced Bluetooth to connect to the companion app. The pen only supports Apple devices because they have the widest compatibility with the new Bluetooth standard. Livescribe may support Android devices when advanced Bluetooth is more widely available. The pen is compatible with iPhone 4S and newer, iPad 3rd generation and newer, and iPod Touch 5th generation. The companion app requires iOS 7.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />The Livescribe 3 requires a special dot paper that Livescribe sells on their website. Some may think of this a negative, but the Livescribe notebooks come in a variety of sizes and are competitively priced. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Livescribe+ App</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Livescribe+ app is the brains of the Livescribe 3 smartpen. The pen sends your notes to the app over Bluetooth and then processes the handwriting and turns it into digital text. The app makes it easy to review notes in a page view or list view<span style="background-color: white;">. Because the app turns handwriting into digital text, it is simple and fast to search through your notebook. You can search by keyword and easily find all associated notes. Once your handwriting has been converted to digital text you can use the built in <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F06%2Fios-7-accessibility-overview-what-we.html&ei=2rmTUvaAHdLdsATZ-oKYDA&usg=AFQjCNFtKveMynfcNpAngZ-zU9c7GrqJWg&sig2=vVk-bQta4TunkyVrsw2Qew&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">iOS</a> Speak Selection feature to have your note read aloud with <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F10%2Fhave-you-ever-wondered-how-text-to.html&ei=frqTUpD6N7jIsAS7oICgBQ&usg=AFQjCNGSgCAsv7qFtTJQLv7hwyWUVm1fFg&sig2=LmGhw_GSUMmlJhM0OkLBQQ&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">text-to-speech</a>.</span><br /><br />The handwriting recognition was amazingly accurate even with my sloppy handwriting and if it does make a mistake you can manually correct it. If you write down a phone number or an address you can save the information as a contact with one tap. If you write down a homework assignment you can save it directly into your Reminders list which is a nice touch. Using an <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F06%2Fios-7-accessibility-overview-what-we.html&ei=2rmTUvaAHdLdsATZ-oKYDA&usg=AFQjCNFtKveMynfcNpAngZ-zU9c7GrqJWg&sig2=vVk-bQta4TunkyVrsw2Qew&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">iOS</a> device as the brains of the smartpen allowed Livescribe to remove the screen, speaker, microphone, and wifi which considerably slimmed down the pen. Using an external microphone eliminates the writing noise that the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CD4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2012%2F11%2Flivescribe-sky-wifi-smartpen-handwriten.html&ei=pbmTUsLtHNPKsQSB04AQ&usg=AFQjCNHl5RbMuYA-dYcP-xjBw0nE6KzHpQ&sig2=BH1BWpTQmu7jyNJiUPhH7g&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">Sky Wifi Smartpen</a> picks up.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Taking the microphone out of the smartpen does not come with out compromise. Because the smartpen relies on the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&ved=0CD0QFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F09%2Fnew-in-ios-7-detailed-look-at-switch.html&ei=2rmTUvaAHdLdsATZ-oKYDA&usg=AFQjCNEytScXOzwconeGoBxjT4h7RrpErg&sig2=h7XoV3ffGdtpNNCFr2_mKA&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">iOS devices</a> microphone you can not record audio without an <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbdmtech.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F06%2Fios-7-accessibility-overview-what-we.html&ei=2rmTUvaAHdLdsATZ-oKYDA&usg=AFQjCNFtKveMynfcNpAngZ-zU9c7GrqJWg&sig2=vVk-bQta4TunkyVrsw2Qew&bvm=bv.56988011,d.cWc">iOS</a> device nearby. You can still capture your written notes and sync them next time you have your iOS device handy. For some who don't always have their device close by, but still want to record audio the Sky Wifi Smartpen is a great option. If you always have your device close by this won't be an issue.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Sharing your notes is one area where the Livescribe+ app really shines. Using the standard iOS 7 share sheet you can share your notes to any app that supports PDFs. This includes Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, and many others. Currently recipients of your documents that don't own an iOS 7 device can only view your handwriting and cannot play back the audio and linked notes known as a pencast. It is really unfortunate that the ability to view pencasts on desktops and Android devices was not present at launch. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Benefits</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Livescribe 3 can benefit many people who need to keep useful notes for work or school. It can be especially useful for students with learning disabilities who struggle to take or keep notes. For example if a teacher is talking about graphing points and the student gets distracted, he can easily go back in his notes and listen to the audio at a later time. <br /><br />Teachers and special educators who have multiple students who get class notes provided as an accommodation can easily use the Livescribe+ app to share the note instantly with everyone in the class. This eliminates the need for hard-to-read carbon paper or delays due to photo copying. For people who struggle with organization, the ability to search for notes maybe enough of a reason to purchase the pen. Using a conventional ball point pen for writing is much easier than using a stylus to write on an iPad. The Livescribe 3 gives you the ability to write with a ball point tip while still getting all of the benefits of having your notes on your iPad.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Possibilities</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Livescribe 3 Smartpen and Livescribe+ app have really solid features that have benefits right out of the box. If you decide to buy the pen you should decide to because of the features currently available, but with very capable hardware and the flexibility of an iOS app Livescribe could and should continue to improve the product. One feature that I would like to see added is the ability to speed up and slow down audio playback. Variable playback speed makes it easy listen to more audio in less time. With the Sky Wifi Smartpen this was an option, but it is not currently available in the Livescribe+ app. Audio transcription is another feature that would be a great addition to the Livescribe+ app. Imagine listening to a lecture and having the entire text transcript of the professor even if you weren't able to write everything down.  With improving speak recognition software this feature is probably technically possible.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Pricing and Availability</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Livescribe 3 starts at $150 for the starter edition. A pro edition with a darker finish, larger leather starter notebook, replacement ink, one year premium Evernote access sells for $200. Both editions are avalible from Livescribe's website.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Videos and Images</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/TFE74S40WoI?rel=0" width="420"></iframe><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.livescribe.com/blog/press/files/2012/05/Livescribe3ProPenLED.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.livescribe.com/blog/press/files/2012/05/Livescribe3ProPenLED.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.livescribe.com/blog/press/files/2012/05/Livescribe3StandardPenSideview.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="52" src="http://www.livescribe.com/blog/press/files/2012/05/Livescribe3StandardPenSideview.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: right;">Device was provided complimentary to reviewer</div></div>

Now both major mobile operating systems include the ability to customize movie and video subtitles system wide.. For iOS, the customization settings are under Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning. From that menu you are able to change the appearance of subtitles of any video played through the default iOS video player. There are many options for customization including font, font size, font color, and background color. Android includes a similar feature that can also be accessed in the settings menu. These options are a welcome addition to mobile devices and can make subtitles much easier to see. It is great to see both <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2013/10/apples-announcements-impact-on.html">Apple</a> and <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2013/06/googles-advance-voice-search-comes-to.html">Google</a> improving <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2013/10/os-x-mavericks-enhanced-dictation.html">accessibility</a> on their mobile products.<o:p></o:p><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://images.apple.com/accessibility/ios/images/hearing_closed_captions.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="230" src="http://images.apple.com/accessibility/ios/images/hearing_closed_captions.jpg" title="image of iPhone using captions" width="320" /></a></div></div>

Prizmo 3 Adds New Features and iOS 7 Optimization

<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/zzRtlJFCIiU?rel=0" width="420"></iframe><br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BTaXJo0CYAEeR6Z.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="75" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BTaXJo0CYAEeR6Z.png" width="75" /></a></div>Pizmo 3 has just been released with a new design which is perfect for <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2013/06/ios-7-accessibility-overview-what-we.html">iOS 7</a>,  and has some helpful new features. After updating, you will notice a new app icon and a redesigned interface, but the changes go deeper than just a new design. The updated app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touches running iOS 7. <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CC4QFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Fprizmo-scanning-ocr-speech%2Fid366791896%3Fmt%3D8&ei=NuU4UveQCqf94APplYDwDA&usg=AFQjCNHyOKTLbhz05uGmmTXwyGag_IRJOw&sig2=xu0XGo1mrr_P7K3blcDpuQ&bvm=bv.52164340,d.dmg">Click here</a> to download Prizmo. Similar to previous versions, Prizmo 3 still allows you to take pictures of text and have the text extracted using optical character recognition (<a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/01/prizmo-great-accurate-full-featured-ocr.html">OCR</a>) in order to have the text read aloud using text-to-speech. In other words, you can take a picture of a document and then <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/01/prizmo-great-accurate-full-featured-ocr.html">Prizmo</a> will read it back to you using text-to-speech. Amazingly, whole process takes less than a minute per page. Prizmo 3 also includes PDF exporting and business card scanning.<br /><br />Prizmo 3 adds a handful of helpful new features including support for dynamic text size, optional faster text-to-speech rate, and one touch multiple page scanning. Dynamic text is a new feature of iOS 7 that allows users to specify a text size that  is easier for them to read.  This text size can be larger or smaller than the default text size. After choosing a text size, all compatible apps, such as Prizmo, will display text in your preferred size. Prizmo 3 also allows users to speed up the text-to-speech rate up to 400% for people who can understand faster speech. Another new time saving feature allows users to scan multi-page documents with a single button press instead of scanning one page at a time. Prizmo 3 is definitely a worthwhile update for all iOS 7 users.<br /><br />To learn more about the features of Prizmo 3 <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2013/05/prizmo-20-for-ios-released-with-cool.html">click here</a>. The newly released Co:Writer app works with the <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/09/best-apps-for-your-new-iphone-5.html">iPhone</a>, iPad, and <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/09/brand-new-ipod-touch-announced.html">iPod Touch</a>. It is important to note that the Co:Writer app has multiple different variations depending on your dialect. For example, there is a separate app for British and United States English.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">To start using the powerful word prediction built into the app you can simply start typing. A bar appears on top of the keyboard with five suggested words based on what you are typing. On the iPhone and iPod Touch some longer words are cut off in the predication bar because of the smaller screen. Tapping on a word inserts it into the document. As each word is added it is spoken aloud with text-to-speech. The word prediction is helpful for struggling writers and spellers. The word prediction can help a writer who </span>doesn't<span style="font-family: inherit;"> know the spelling of a word by spelling the word if you can type the first few letters. Once you have completed your sentence it is spoken back to you. Co:Writer also includes a speak button with reads the entire document with <a href="http://www.blogger.com/"><span id="goog_1004433608"></span>text-to-speech<span id="goog_1004433609"></span></a> while highlighting the spoken word.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Co:Writer also has one more amazing feature. You can tell the app what you are going to be writing about to receive even better word prediction results. The app includes many topics such as William Shakespeare, Albert Einstein, and Global Warming. If you enable the Einstein topic dictionary it will give you word suggestions based on words related to Einstein. With the Einstein dictionary on, typing it the letter “r” leads to the suggestion of “relativity.” These customizable predictions help to make writing a smother process.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">When you are ready to share your writing you have numerous options. This year's <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/06/watch-apple-announce-ios-6.html">WWDC</a> keynote will give users a preview of the new features coming to their Apple devices in the coming months.<br /><br />Last year at WWDC Apple previewed <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/10/assistive-touch-improvements-in-ios-6.html">iOS 6</a> with new <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2011/12/ios-5-camera-accessibility.html">accessibility</a> features including <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/09/what-is-guided-access.html">Guided Access</a>, <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/10/how-to-use-ios-6-speak-selection-with.html">Speak Selection</a> with highlighting, <a href="http://bdmtech.blogspot.com/2012/10/assistive-touch-improvements-in-ios-6.html">Assistive Touch</a> improvements, and much more. Apple devoted a portion of their WWDC 2012 keynote to iOS accessibility. These features were added to the already robust accessibility features for iOS. HoverCam: Portable Scanner and Document Viewer In One

<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tXuiJt3lWZQ?rel=0" width="560"></iframe><br /><br /></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The HoverCam is a collapsible document camera and scanner all in one portable package. The HoverCam first slides out of the base and then swings out from the arm. The HoverCam T5 has a five megapixel camera which allows the HoverCam to capture crisp scans of documents up to 11" X 14". The HoverCam plugs into a Mac or PC using USB and does not require any external power. To begin using the HoverCam, launch the HoverCam Flex software which is included with the HoverCam T5. The HoverCam Flex software gives you the option to start scanning, capture a video, or show and annotate a document on a projector. Click read more below to learn more.<br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thehovercam.com/templates/hovercam/images/landing/t3_main.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://www.thehovercam.com/templates/hovercam/images/landing/t3_main.png" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Scanning:</b></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In order to scan to a PDF, JPEG, or other file type, <span class="GRcorrect" grcontextid="place:0" grmarkguid="8f4f762d-30af-40d0-9af4-b0e2653453d5" gruiphraseguid="02cf18aa-2864-49aa-9000-9a98cf3e0a4e">place</span> the document under the camera and position it properly then snap the picture. If you have more than one page you can use an included alignment bumper to line up each page more quickly. The HoverCam takes pictures very quickly with almost no time lag. Scanning documents with the HoverCam seems to be more difficult than scanning documents with a flatbed scanner. A scanner requires less aliment and adjustments but at the HoverCam is much more portable than a flatbed scanner. A scanner with a multi-page feeder would also be much faster than the HoverCam at scanning multi-page documents. The document quality is similar to the quality of a scanner which is impressive for a device of this size. From my experience the HoverCam has similar quality and speed compared to a portable scanner. I would not recommend students rely on the HoverCam to scan documents during class unless it is at a work-station during study hall . Using any scanner during class while the teacher is lecturing or other students are working with the print material can be distracting and time consuming. Scanning of books is one of the strong suits of the HoverCam. You can just put the book under the HoverCam, align in correctly, and then scan the first two pages then just flip the page to scan the next two pages. With a flatbed scanner it is much more difficult because you must lift the book after each page. The HoverCam includes built in LED lights for use in dimly lit rooms. The HoverCam also includes a mat with tactile alignment ridges for the blind and visually impaired.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Video:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Video recording is not the HoverCam's strong suit. The video seemed very choppy and the audio from the built in microphone was muffled. When moving a hand across the screen the hand would have a ghost effect.  </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Document Camera:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The HoverCam also has document camera functionality. It allows teachers or presenters to display documents to a group. The built in LED lights provide good image quality even in dimly light rooms. When showing a document you can add annotations including text and underlines. The HoverCam also includes a Kensington-compatible security slo<span style="font-family: hc_arial_narrow;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 18px;">t so you can lock it up when you're not using it.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Kurzweil Compatibility:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Kurzweil 3000 users can use the HoverCam as a scanner to directly scan documents into Kurzweil. Watch the above video to learn more about HoverCam compatibility with Kurzweil. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Pricing/Availability:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The HoverCam T3 costs $219 and the HoverCam T5 costs $279 from <a href="http://thehovercam.com/">thehovercam.com</a>. The HoverCam T3 includes a 3 megapixel camera while the T5 includes a 5 megapixel camera. The T5 includes some other features that are not available on the less expensive T3. For teachers, the HoverCam is a good document camera with annotation options.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Sample Document Scans:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u>Using HoverCam:</u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u><br /></u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe height="425" src="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_oS9Qa0krJZdS1SSmdLcE52VzA/preview" width="545"></iframe><br /></div><u><br /></u><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u>Using Scanner Pro for iPhone:</u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u><br /></u></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe height="425" src="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_oS9Qa0krJZS0xHR2ZVMldBQjA/preview" width="545"></iframe><br /><div style="text-align: right;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: right;">This product was provide to reviewer for purpose of review and was returned</div></div>
